Sanibel, Florida
Designed by architect Amy Nowacki, a native of Sanibel, the intimate 410-seat BIG Arts Performance Hall at Sanibel Island Cultural Arts Center is known for its exceptional sound quality during performances, something Nowacki credits the help of architectural acoustics consultant, Edward Dugger + Associates Acoustics (ED+A).
To screen the structural and technical support systems at the ceiling without influencing the acoustical shape of the room environment, ED+A designed the 2,800 sq. ft. Fabricoil® coiled wire fabric system using Cascade's pre-engineered Sleeve attachment hardware for mounting. Proving to be the perfect fit for this decorative screening application, For architectural ceiling treatments like this one, the simultaneously open and closed spiral weave of Fabricoil coiled wire fabric beautifully reflects light to conceal the space above while the material's acoustically-transparent properties allow sound waves to penetrate freely, reaching the ceiling above unobstructed where strategically-placed acoustic materials can then do their job to enhance the quality of sound throughout the space.
Showcasing the inherent versatility of the easily customizable Fabricoil system, the design team utilized Fabricoil coiled wire fabric to perform a partitioning function in the space, as well, flanking the stage with an additional 580 sq. ft. of metal mesh drapery suspended from the ceiling using Steel Secura Track hardware—another of many pre-engineered attachment systems available from Cascade. For the ceiling, a 5/16" weave using 18 ga. Steel, and for the vertical 5/16" 14-ga. Aluminum for a vertical drapery application flanking each side of the stage. Both the aluminum and steel metal mesh panels were manufactured to specification and powder-coated in Cascade's Brightened finish for a consistent aesthetic despite the variation in wire material selection.
