Lewisville, TX
When Lewisville ISD opened Hedrick Middle School in Lewisville, Texas, the district added a 176,000 sq ft STEM campus to a portfolio funded by a $737 million bond that 63 percent of voters approved in 2017. In 2024–25, that building earned a Star of Distinction at the TASA/TASB Texas Exhibit of School Architecture — the state's most-watched showcase of public school design.
Led by Stantec's Plano studio alongside Pogue Construction as general contractor, the new building's key architectural principles focus heavily on leveraging "transparencies… creating a strong visual connection from the entry, into the dining space, and beyond into an exterior courtyard," according to Stantec.
Cascade Architectural's contribution to that strategy is geometric and precise: 17 vertical Fabricoil® Coiled Wire Fabric System fins, deployed across two distinct exterior façades. Five fins are set inboard of the two-story curtain wall at the front entry, recessed under the cantilevered overhang and back-dropped by the building's signature orange-copper metal panel cladding. In this condition the fins are deliberately a secondary element to the portal moment — mitigating solar heat gain experienced by the building's interior spaces while softening the glazing, modulating sightlines into the entry, and giving the recessed volume its own textural depth without competing with the facade's architectural hero.
Twelve additional fins hang outboard a glazed wall facing the courtyard — each independently mounted and tensioned using one of Cascade's pre-engineered attachment systems, Coast, to stand off the glass at a true exterior-sunshade depth that is positioned to temper direct exposure on the courtyard-facing learning environments within.
Across both applications, Fabricoil system specifications are consistent, totaling 1,975 sq ft of 1/4" 16 ga Stainless Steel Type 316 coiled wire fabric in a natural finish, mounted in the horizontal coil direction. The base wire materials boast a Declare-labeled Red List Free certification from the International Living Future Institute offering the building team and school district owners the pinnacle in material certifications and a sustainability benefit sought increasingly more often every week by architects and designers across all markets, especially K-12 education.
The fully engineered solution was derived in partnership with Cascade's in-house technical product specialists and engineering capabilities and ultimately manufactured to specification to suit the project's specific requirements. A small but essential piece of a comprehensive facade system that Stantec organized around daylighting, the custom Fabricoil Coiled Wire Fabric solar shading solution at Hedrick helps to ensure that the school's interior spaces can fully experience the benefits that the large glass curtain walls provide while retaining the unobstructed sightlines that link these key entry/egress points to the outside environments.
