San Diego, California
Designers of the Athena Parking Garage on University of California San Diego's medical campus aimed to make a statement both visually and functionally. The goal was to design and develop a parking garage experience that was intuitive and as pleasant as possible given that garage users for a medical center are often in stressful circumstances pre- or post-medical visit.
The design-build project that included teams from McCarthy Building Companies, IPD (the architect of record), and Studio E Architects produced an award-winning structure that features 3/8” stainless steel Fabricoil® panels attached in a cantilevered position. The horizontal-oriented coiled mesh panels provide multiple performance benefits.
First, the Fabricoil metal mesh panels offer shade for pedestrians cruising the walkway below, a welcome respite from the bright San Diego sun. The durable metal mesh is installed directly above the opening on the third level, providing fall protection for occupants walking near the garage’s perimeter above the installation, including the rooftop level.
Fabricoil mesh also provides protection for those walking underneath the systems. Durable metal mesh intercepts rain, snow, or any potential debris falling from above.
Overall, Studio E Architects wanted to bring life and human activity to the parking structure’s facades. This primarily consisted of creating areas of pedestrian circulation, including walks, stairs, and glazed elevators. Fabricoil metal mesh was a key component in visually enhancing the garage’s exterior and bringing this design team’s vision to life.
