Tempe, Arizona
The Tempe Transportation Center is a three-story, 40,000 sq. ft. modern transit plaza serving light rail and local bus patrons in Tempe, AZ. Like many structures in the southwest, sun control plays a key role in building design. As a result, architects were looking for materials that blend aesthetics with that very function when they found Fabricoil® coiled wire fabric exterior solar shading systems.
For the exterior screening application, steel Fabricoil architectural mesh panels were selected to protect the building's retail stores, offices and community rooms from the harsh Southwest desert environment. The vertical shade panels featured on the new design of the transit shelters provide much needed relief during the day, as well as enhanced ventilation throughout the building facade without destroying views from the interior given the inherent open area of the innovative spiral weave. Ultimately, coiled wire fabric has proven to be the optimal solution for shading the interior spaces and dramatically reducing the rise of internal temperatures, in turn saving money and energy through HVAC load reduction.
Overall, the combination of architectural features selected to be part of the high-performance building envelope and its integrated systems were developed and tested with computer modeling, resulting in a 52% reduction of energy use, for which the exterior screens played an important role alongside other strategies including a green vegetated desert roof, underfloor air distribution system, solar hot water system, and more.
Moreover, as the building sought LEED Platinum certification, Fabricoil's sustainability contribution also played an important role by utilizing American-made materials that are 100% salvageable at end-of-life and meet stringent Red List Free requirements.
