New York, New York
The Johnson & Johnson Design Center in New York City is a creative workspace for members of the company’s design team. It serves as the hub for employees charged with important responsibilities, such as user interface and user experience for websites and environmental design.
The center is vital for Johnson & Johnson, because the team’s work feeds into all of the company’s business groups – consumer, pharmacy, medical devices, and corporate marketing and communications. Given this, the company paid special attention to the space where employees would develop creative campaigns that would ultimately serve as the company’s face and voice in the marketplace.
Because the studio is primarily open space, the interior design team sought a material that would add a decorative touch but also fulfill a variety of other functions.
By selecting 1/8” Fabricoil® with a Brightened finish, designers created operable, space-dividing partitions that also offer privacy.
A semi-transparent material, Fabricoil does not totally isolate areas of the room when used as a partition, because it still allows views through the material. This was important for the Johnson & Johnson Design Center, giving employees a sense of cohesion and not restricting collaboration.
Alternatively, Fabricoil serves as a solar shading mechanism for the studio’s large window expanses. The metal mesh allows a degree of light to pass through but blocks enough of the sun’s rays to reduce glare and keeps temperatures from rising. This results in energy savings for the facility.
